What is the reason behind removing the prerequisites?
The removal of prerequisites coincides with NZTA ending of warrants and is effective from 1 November 2024. The prerequisites removal will allow for award of unit standards to TTM personnel who are currently competent, to complete Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) for individual standards.
The purpose of the unit standard describes what the person will be able to do once awarded the standard. Removal of the prerequisites does not change this outcome, and it should not impact on the quality of training for TTM personnel. It is the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) who has the overall responsibility to ensure the safety of TTM personnel on a TTM worksite in line with HSWA Act 2015.
TTM personnel who need to learn new skills for the risk-based approach to TTM should use the new standards. These standards align with the TTM Credentials Framework that reflects the approach and direction of TTM training.

Will Connexis accept new assessor applications to assess unit standards 31957-31963?
At this stage, Connexis are not accepting new assessor registrations for unit standard 31957-31963. There are currently sufficient numbers of assessors and Connexis will maintain the scope of these assessors until replacement skill standards and Micro-credentials become available.
Will Connexis allow current trainers and assessors to extend their scope to include unit standards that are not already assigned to them?
Connexis will not be accepting TTM Assessor scope extensions until further notice. All applications received before 1 November 2024 will be processed.
Are TMO trainers still required to keep studying to gain the NZ Certificate in Adult and Tertiary Teaching?
This is not a Connexis requirement for assessor registration, it would be up to the individual person if they wanted to continue that study. This is an advantageous certificate for someone to hold though if they are involved in training and assessing. However, assessor registration with Connexis, requires assessors to have the qualification they are wanting to assess, or preferably one level above as well as unit standard 4098.
Is it necessary for Connexis assessors to have the unit standards on their scope in their own Record of Achievement or is equivalent experience sufficient for delivering the unit standards?
In order to gain assessor scope, assessors need to:
- hold the qualification or unit or skill standard
- or provide evidence of skill and/or knowledge to at least the level of the qualification and/or unit/skill standard
Any questions about the scope extension process should be directed to our Quality Assurance team at quality@connexis.org.nz.
Can other NZQA approved providers use the Waka Kotahi and Connexis training and assessment materials if they are not registering their results via Connexis?
If the results are not being registered through Connexis, the NZQA registered provider is responsible for meeting all of their obligations with NZQA and the appropriate WDC. This would include using their own approved training and assessment materials.
Do these changes mean that Connexis is now the point of contact for employers and learners rather than the trainers and assessors themselves?
If the training and assessment is against the existing unit standards (31957-31963) the trainers and assessors remain as the contact, there is no change to the current process. For the new Micro-credentials as they are made available, Connexis will be the point of contact for learners wanting to complete as they must be enrolled with Connexis as the NZQA registered provider with approval.
Are trainers and assessors now contractors to Connexis rather than independent assessors?
There is no change to the current trainers and assessors for units 31957-31963. These will continue to be delivered and arranged by those individuals.
Do current TTM Trainers and TTM Assessors need to do anything to be able to continue training and assessing going forward?
Assessors must comply with the following Connexis requirements to maintain their assessor registration:
- Reported assessment within the previous 12 months
- Attended a forum within two years
- Good moderation record.
Will there be a new alternative to the CoPTTM public search where I can check what unit standards someone holds?
Unit standards and qualifications can be checked by an NZQA Record of Achievement (RoA). This is something the learner will need to obtain themselves and provide as it relates to their personal information, it is not publicly available.
What will the recognition of prior learning process look like to move from warrants to unit standards?
How will those with the legacy warrants (TC, L1 STMS, L2/3 STMS) fit into this?
Connexis is currently working on finalising the details for this process. As soon as more information is available, we will communicate this process.
Do refreshing STMSs now have to also complete the two verified closures in addition to the assessment closure in order to be awarded unit standard 31963?
In order for an assessor to report a unit standard result, the learner must have completed and met all requirements of the assessment book. If a learner already holds a warrant and is wants this recognised as prior learning for the associated unit standard, this is the Recognition of Learning (RoL) process that will be managed by Connexis. More information to come shortly about this process.
With TTM Mentor warrants being discontinued, who can act as the verifier?
The verifier must hold appropriate organisational and legislative authority for the work being undertaken in order to sign the form in the assessment book. Ultimately, they have the same role and responsibility as the TTM Mentor to observe the learner and confirm the learner’s competency in the task they observed.
Do we need to re-sit the unit standards every 3 years like we have needed to with warrants?
Unit standards are not required to be completed multiple times, once someone has been deemed competent in a unit standard and it is reported to NZQA it will show on that persons NZQA Record of Achievement (RoA) for life.
Will it cost anything to register unit standards? Will the costs be charged to the learner or the assessor?
Reporting of unit standards to Connexis will be invoiced at $6.50+GST per credit. Credit amounts vary between 5, 10 or 20 credits per TTM unit standard and will be invoiced accordingly. Invoices are sent to the assessor, as they submit the results to Connexis.
Where do I get the learner assessments for unit standards 31958-31963?
The assessments for unit standard 31958-31963 are available to Connexis registered assessors through their Connexis eLearning login.
Can I edit the training materials for unit standards 31958-31963?
No, the training materials cannot be edited, this is to ensure protection of the intellectual property and no copyright infringements are made.
