Our Pavement Surfacing qualifications are suitable for people working at all levels in the surfacing sector - from new entrants, through to skilled operators, and people managing teams and projects. Qualifications can be achieved individually or as a structured pathway, and can be tailored to meet the individual needs of the employer and employee. *NEW* CIVIL TRADES QUALIFICATION

Formal recognition for skilled infrastructure workers

This Level 4 qualification will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work with limited or no supervision to produce quality bituminous product for pavement surfacing.

It covers key skills including:
  • Safety and quality assurance
  • Applying knowledge of bituminous surfacings, materials, supply chain and plant and equipment
  • Carrying out the requirements for storing, handling and pumping liquid bituminous products
  • Internal and external communication
One or more of the specialist strands must also be completed.

The qualification will take around 12-18 months to complete, depending on the strand(s) selected. 

Gaining this qualification, combined with 8,000 hours of experience, will make you eligible to apply for Civil Trades Certification. Visit our Civil Trades page for details.

*NEW* CIVIL TRADES QUALIFICATION

Formal recognition for skilled infrastructure workers

This Level 4 qualification will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work with limited or no supervision to produce quality bituminous surfacing.

It covers key skills including:
  • Safety and quality assurance
  • Applying knowledge of bituminous surfacings, materials, the supply chain and plant and equipment
  • Knowledge of control measures to ensure quality products are produced onsite
  • Identifying and notifying the nature and extent of site works
One or more of the specialist strands must also be completed.

The qualification will take around 12-18 months to complete, depending on the strand(s) selected.

NEW! IW2 - Your first step in the civil infrastructure industry
An introductory qualification for people who are starting out in their career or who have transferred from another industry. Ideal for those working in civil works, rural contracting, surfacing or underground utilities.

This qualification covers key skills including:
  • Health and safety
  • Communication
  • Record keeping and accident reporting
  • Care and maintenance of hand tools
  • Basic machinery maintenance
  • Hand spreading
IW2 will take around nine months to complete and is mainly achieved on-job.

NEW! IW3 - Your next step in the civil infrastructure industry
IW3 is the cornerstone qualification for those wishing to move into technical roles in civil works, surfacing construction and manufacturing, pipe installations and utilities maintenance.

It covers key skills including: 
  • Health, safety and environment
  • Communication
  • Slinging, lifting, moving and placing loads
  • Knowledge of protection and support systems for excavation
  • Monitoring and inspecting your own work
  • Materials compaction and testing
  • Safe operation and maintenance of at least three types of small plant and equipment
  • Securing and transporting small plant and equipment
IW3 will take around 9-12 months to complete and is mainly achieved on-job.


National Certificate in Infrastructure Works Supervision (IW4)

This qualification has expired and is no longer open for enrolments.

It will be replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works (Site Supervision), which will be available at the end of 2017.
