A new chapter
On 1 November 2026, Connexis returned back to industry-ownership after several years of changes across the vocational education and training system, strengthening its role as New Zealand's Infrastructure Training Provider.
Through industry-led, work-based training and apprenticeships, Connexis will continue to help grow the individuals and companies that power New Zealand's infrastructure, now and into the future.
Why is this happening?
Over recent years, New Zealand's vocational education system has undergone significant reform and change.
Throughout that period, Connexis remained focused on supporting employers, learners and industry, ensuring continuity while the wider system evolved around us.
The transition from the Energy & Infrastructure Industry Skills Board (EI ISB) into Connexis Inc as a Private Training Provider (PTE) marks the beginning of a new and independent future. As a not-for-profit, charitable organisation owned and governed by industry, we're now better positioned to focus with confidence and certainty on the long-term workforce needs of the sectors we serve.
Why does this matter?
Industry knows industry best
The future of New Zealand's infrastructure depends on a skilled, capable workforce.
As New Zealand's infrastructure training provider, industry has shaped who we are for decades. Now, our ownership model reflects that heritage once again.
For industry, however, this is an important milestone. Connexis is back in industry ownership, creating an even stronger connection between industry needs and workforce development. Connexis Inc. is a membership based charitable organisation, with Civil Contractors New Zealand, the Electricity Engineers’ Association and Water New Zealand joining as founding members.
What does this mean for employers?
More industry voice. More industry influence
Being industry-owned and industry-led means the industries we serve have an even stronger voice in shaping the future direction of workforce development.
That includes ensuring training remains relevant, practical and aligned to the capabilities employers need both today and tomorrow.
Most importantly, employers can continue to expect:
- The same trusted Connexis team
- The same programmes and support
- The same commitment to quality outcomes
- A continued focus on meeting industry workforce needs

What does this mean for learners
The same support on your learning journey
If you're an apprentice or trainee, you don't need to do anything differently.
Your training programmes, support networks and relationships with Connexis remain unchanged.
Our focus continues to be helping learners gain the skills, knowledge and qualifications needed to build rewarding careers across New Zealand's infrastructure industries.

Looking ahead
Industry owned, future ready
Returning to industry ownership isn't about changing who we are. It's about strengthening what we have always been.
From 1 November, Connexis has begun a new chapter with industry at the centre, providing a strong platform for the future while continuing to deliver the trusted support employers and learners depend on. We're proud of how far we've come, excited about what's ahead, and committed to helping build the skilled workforce that powers New Zealand's infrastructure.
