					<div class="ctl_popup_desc"><div class="ctl-description"><p>Connexis was involved in the Women in Trades Research Consortium in partnership with other ITOs.</p>
<p>This was 3 years of research, with the findings released in 2019.  The project aimed to support getting more females into trades across industries that are traditionally male-dominated.</p>
<p>The research formalised understanding of barriers for females from both a trainees&#8217; perspective and employers.  Personas were also developed to highlight what traits make for successful women in trades.</p>

					<div class="ctl_popup_desc"><div class="ctl-description"><p>By 2015 Ultimit was no longer trying to change the perception of the Electricity industry in terms of employing females.  The industry was on-board and keen to recruit females.  The new challenge was now finding females keen to join.</p>
<p>As Frances Hague the Ex-chair said – the project had moved from Revolution to Evolution.</p>
<p>In 2015 the Ultimit brand was rebranded to be Ultimit:Women in Infrastructure.  Incorporating all the infrastructure industries serviced by Connexis, Civil, Energy, Telco and Water.</p>
<p>It was recognised that the women already working in the industry had been introduced by a family member or friend. So under the Ultimit umbrella a brand a new initiative was launched  &#8211; Girls with Hi-Vis®.</p>
<p>The concept of GWHV was to invite our customer companies to open their door for the day and have their employees invite their sisters, daughters, cousins along with school students to their workplace and get a taste for the industry.</p>
<p><strong>The first Girls with Hi-Vis (GWHV) events welcomed 48 attendees at 7 GWHV events.</strong></p>

<p>The ESITO Board committed $150,000 from reserves to undertake further research. Two cohort groups of female Electricity Supply trainees were, recruited and employed by Northpower and Electrix.  Heathrose Research were contracted to follow these females over the course of two-years.</p>
<p>From following the females and companies on this journey the research showed women:</p>
<ul>
<li>enhanced the teams they were part of</li>
<li>brought new approaches to their roles</li>
<li>were perceived by managers as more health and safety conscious, with better attention to detail, less likely to take shortcuts and more likely to adhere to standard procedures.</li>
<li>found new techniques and tools for completing physically demanding tasks. This benefited all employees with improved techniques, reducing the risk of accidents and injury from fatigue and undertaking heavy work.</li>
</ul>
<p>To continue work on Ultimit funding was gained through lobbying CEOs and Key people in the Electricity Supply Industry.  $350,000 was raised over three years allowing for a project manager to be employed and for the brand to gain profile and increase visibility within the industry.</p>

					<div class="ctl_popup_desc"><div class="ctl-description"><p><strong>Ultimit: Women in Infrastructure began as a research project called &#8220;Women in Power&#8221; &#8211; led by Chair Frances Hague of the then ESITO Board.</strong></p>
<p>It was recognised that the industry was missing out on an opportunity during a time of significant skills shortage, and when the industry was constantly on the Immigration New Zealand Skilled Shortage list.  While women made up 50% of our population they were significantly underrepresented in trade and technical roles within the Electricity sector, making up only 2% of the workforce.</p>
<p>The research set out to better understand the attitudes and perceptions of operational people in the sector in terms of employing females.  The Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MWA) partnered with ESITO on the ‘Women in Power” project.</p>
<p>The results highlighted the entrenched views, that this was not an industry for women. It was clear where the focus needed to be; on changing the minds and perceptions of those making the decisions. A significant change was required in recruitment and workplace practices and culture.</p>

<li>Have at least 3 - 5 years’ experience working within your industry</li>
<li>Have been working at the level of the qualification for the past two years</li>

<p>Moderation is carried out by moderators who are senior in their industry and are responsible for conducting:</p>
<ul>
<li>Internal moderation of the assessments carried out by Connexis registered assessors and contracted providers.</li>
<li>Pre-assessment moderation of assessment resources developed for Connexis programmes.</li>
<li>Moderation of newly registered assessors.</li>
</ul>
<p>To ensure that assessment practice is up to the standard, Connexis moderates assessors annually on a plan that covers all unit standards reported over a five-year period.</p>
<p>Connexis is also required to comply with annual external moderation requirements set up by the relevant Workforce Development Council (WDC) or NZQA.</p>

<p>To become a Connexis Assessor, as a pre-requisite, you are expected to attend a Connexis Assessor Training Course and must hold unit standard 4098 <em>Use standards to assess candidate performance</em>.</p>
<p>If you already hold unit standard 4098, an assessor application will be considered if you complete the <a href="https://connexis.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Connexis-Assessor-Application-Form-v8.0-20262301-Editable-Form.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: #000080;">Assessor Application Form</span></a> and return to <span style="color: #000080;"><u><a style="color: #000080;" href="mailto:quality@connexis.org.nz">quality@connexis.org.nz</a>.</u></span></p>
<p>The unit standard covered in the Connexis Assessor Training Course is:</p>

<p><strong>Course details</strong></p>

<ul>
 	<li>Candidates will learn about Assessor process and practice and complete the practical tasks required to achieve US4098.</li>
 	<li>Connexis will forward two assessments for candidates to complete as trainees. The assessments <strong>must be completed</strong> prior to attending the course.</li>
 	<li>The two-day course runs from 9am – 3pm each day.</li>
 	<li>The cost to attend the two-day Assessor training course is $550 (plus GST)</li>
 	<li>A minimum of eight registered attendees are required for a course to proceed. Courses will be confirmed two weeks prior to the advertised date.</li>

 	<li>The completed 4098 portfolio is submitted to an external assessor for assessment.</li>

</div><div id="" class="x-text" style="" ><p>Connexis trains assessors who want to assess learners enrolled in APA programmes, either externally or, in some cases, in-house.</p>
<p>To apply, you must be a currently registered Connexis Assessor with at least five years of experience and have had your assessments supported in moderation during this period. Additionally, applicants need to be endorsed by their employer and have two referees.</p>

We set programmes, evaluate assessments, and support employers and learners to obtain nationally-recognised micro-credentials and qualifications through apprenticeships and traineeships.</p>
<p>We are passionate about creating a sustainable infrastructure workforce for New Zealand, which responds to the needs of industry, both now and in the future. This includes improving access to training and encouraging diversity to reach underrepresented groups such as women, disabled, Māori, and Pasifika.</p>
<p>Connexis is New Zealand's infrastructure training provider. As part of the redesign of the vocational education and training (VET) system, Connexis transitioned on 1 January 2026 from the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (formerly known as Te Pūkenga) to the Energy and Infrastructure Industry Skills Board. This transition is for a limited time allowing plans to be developed with industry on Connexis becoming a private training establishment, owned and led by industry.</p>

IITO was formed as a merger between the Electricity Supply ITO and the Civil Infrastructure ITO. Telecommunications and the 3 Waters (drinking water, wastewater and stormwater) then joined Connexis to cover the full infrastructure industry.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:315,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="none">As the Infrastructure Industry Training Organisation in New Zealand, Connexis was responsible for arranging on-job training, and held the standard setting gazetted coverage for the infrastructure industry.</span><span data-ccp-props="{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:315,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}"> </span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="none">In 2019, Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) was announced by the government to bring together on-</span><span data-contrast="none">job, on campus, and online vocational learning through a unified, sustainable network of regionally accessible provision. In 2021, Connexis joined Work-Based Learning as part of RoVE.</span></p>
<p><span data-contrast="none">New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST) (Previously Te Pūkenga) </span>was set up to be a Crown entity established to unite Institutes of Technology, Polytechnics (ITPs) and Industry Training Organisations around the country into a unified national network as part of the Government’s <a href="https://www.tec.govt.nz/rove/reform-of-vocational-education/">Reform of Vocational Education</a>.</p>
<p><span data-contrast="none">However, under a change of government, as of 1 January 2026, NZIST has been disestablished, and a new, independent, and industry-led model for work-based learning is being introduced. As part of this decision, eight Industry Skills Boards (ISBs) have been created, and as of 1st January 2026, Connexis has moved into the Energy and Infrastructure Industry Skills Board. </span></p>

<p>Water treatment covers the monitoring, treatment and supply of drinking water, from the source to the tap. We offer water treatment qualifications at Levels 4 and 5.</p>

As consumers we expect fast, reliable access to the information networks we use every day to keep in touch, do business and live our lives online.</p>
<p>The sector that makes it all possible is going through its own rapid transformation, as New Zealand invests in telecommunications at one of the fastest rates in the OECD. Projects such as the rollout of ultrafast broadband, rural broadband initiatives and new 4G mobile networks are making more people connected in more locations – lifting living standards and enhancing our economy’s capacity.</p>
<p>Within the industry, fierce competition, cutbacks, consolidation and technological innovation continue to create an environment of change and opportunity. At the grassroots level, companies are facing a shortage of qualified workers to meet the demands of new telecommunications contracts.</p>

<p>Connexis now has statutory responsibility for developing and managing the quality of work practice standards and training programmes relevant to the Telecommunications workforce.</p>
<p>Over the past five years, Connexis worked closely with industry stakeholders and The Skills Organisation to create the courses and programmes that will produce a strong, reliable telecommunications workforce.</p>
