A new initiative between Shirley Boys High School, Isaac Construction Ltd, BG Contracting Ltd and Connexis, with the support of the CCNZ Canterbury Branch, is enabling students to experience the Civil Infrastructure Industry within the school environment.
Thirty four students, school and construction staff, will work together throughout the year to develop the knowledge, skills and habits that are foundational for a successful career in Civil Construction (Horizontal and Vertical). A comprehensive plan including, paving, kerbs, boxing, drainage, concrete and wooden structures, and paths (see below) is in place for construction during the course and the team have already got off to a good start learning how to identify services. Excavation next!
The school and wider community will benefit from what the students construct during the course.

Site operations emulate the same standards and processes used within the industry such as:
- Take 5’s
- Time Sheets
- Incident reports
- Quality control
- Program management
- Communication skills
The students aim to be workforce ready when they complete the course and already well down the path towards qualifications that could lead to a Trade Certification or similar in the future.
Exposing the students to just how rewarding this industry can be as lifelong career and preparing them to embark on their career is the main objective of the course.
